The spool your tape or rope comes on is not designed to last long term, the manufacturer only expects the spool to hold the tape until it is used the first time.
Reels can be used for storage, properly stored tape ( or rope ) will last a lot longer and will save you time not having to unravel a 200m long knot.....

Where a temporary fence line ( strip grazing ) varies in length a reel can be used to hold the excess tape until the fence is moved again and the stored tape is required.
OR
Just a convenient way to store tape for the 45 min it take to move to a new paddock etc etc ...
