Christmas 2020 - Let Those You Love Know It More Than Ever!

A horse clipper really is a great present for a horse lover (really!)

What a year.  For those of you lucky enough to have pets to distract you from what's going on in the world, I am sure you feel very fortunate and have bonded with them and spent more time with them than ever before.

Here at FarmCare UK we have seen huge demand for horse clippers and trimmers since the Covid crisis commenced in March.   Lister Shearing have stayed open (down in Gloucestershire) during both lockdowns and they have been manufacturing their Lister Liberty, Lister Star, Lister Fusion and Lister Legend non stop - and still unable to keep up with demand!  With professional horse clippers either not able to work, or unable to keep up with requests people have often had to give clipping a go for the first time themselves.  From what we have heard, most have found it easier and more rewarding than expected.   Clipping your own animal makes it less traumatic and for some, even a bonding moment.  It's definitely cheaper to clip the horse yourself!

We have over 20 years experience with horse clippers and we are confident we've got the best selection.  There are some really concerning brands in the market place, and with such a big investment it's worth getting it right.  By far the best brands are Heiniger (made in Switzerland and usually with a 3 year warranty) and Lister Shearing (made here in the UK, with the Royal Warrant and they usually have a 2 year warranty).

Here are our picks for the best 2020 Christmas Present Horse Clippers and Animal Trimmers, based on reliability, performance and value.

Best Starter Horse Clipper 2020:  The Lister Star Horse Clipper!  Available in green or purple, and with a free second blade, a free oil, a free Pico trimmer and if you get the Purple Star it has a lovely hold-all bag instead of the hard case.  This is amazing value (the best deal of all the clippers) starting at £199.99.  You can select the blades you get with the clipper (most other retailers do not give you this option) and they have a 2 year warranty.   These clippers are great fro anyone with between 1 and 3 horses and they are especially good if you have small hands.  They run from the mains.   These are not the right clippers if you need a cordless clipper or if you have a horse with a challenging coat or if you clip a lot of horses.

Best Cordless Horse Clipper 2020:  Ooooooo a tricky one and we've got to go for a tie here!  The Heiniger Xplorer is fantastic because the battery is in the actual handle of the horse clipper.  It's the quietest horse clipper of the cordless options and it has a 3 year warranty.  It's also light and comfortable to use and takes all the standard Heiniger blades.  The only downside is that it has no mains option and it is fractionally longer than some other cordless clippers (perhaps because the battery is in the handle).   The Lister Liberty Cordless Clipper (sometimes called the Lister Liberty Popular Pack) is our other pick for Best Cordless Horse Clipper!  The battery for this one clips around your waist.  It's a quiet clipper (although not quite at quiet as the Heiniger Xplorer) and very comfortable to use.  It can run from a battery, from the mains and from a 12 volt battery too - you just select which 'pack' works for you.  The Lister Liberty Popular Pack is the battery option, the Lister Liberty Yard Pack is the battery and mains together and the Lister Liberty Mains Pack is...you guessed it...the mains option.  You can also get a Lister Liberty Field Pack option that runs from a 12 volt battery.   The Lister Liberty is definitely a step up form the Lister Star - the clipper is more powerful and more robust.  Professional clippers often use the Lister Liberty because it has good power, but less vibration and noise than the Heavy-Duty clippers like the Lister Fusion.  The Liberty takes all the Lister blades, including the very popular Covercote blade that clips to 5mm and is only available for Lister clippers (people who show their horses love this blade and often pick Lister just for the blade!).  You can't go wrong with either of these clippers and can easily clip a horse on one battery charge.

Best Heavy-Duty Horse Clipper 2020:  Another tricky one to call.....but the Lister Fusion Horse Clipper is a proven favourite.  It's been on the market for 2 years now and has got great reviews.  It has 2 speeds, takes all the Lister blades (including the popular Covercote blade that is unique to Lister) and is really tough.  It's also surprisingly light for a heavy-duty clipper and the noise is better than most other heavy-duty clippers on the market.  This is a great option for people with a lot of horses to clip - for yards, professionals and challenging coats.   It's available in red or blue and has a 2 year warranty.  Plus, at the moment it's a great deal as we are offering a second set of blades FREE!

Lister Fusion:  https://www.farmcareuk.com/Fusionhorse.html  £315.00

Best Horse Clipper for Nervous Horses who don't like to be clipped 2020:  The new Heiniger Saphir Horse is a great option for those with nervous horses with normal coats.  It's VERY quiet with VERY low vibrations, yet it is tough and powerful for its small size.  It will take slightly longer to clip your horse as the blade is a bit narrower than a full size blade.  The blade is also a pre-tensioned snap on type - so great for people who don't feel confident tensioning their blades.

If you have a nervous horse, with a challenging coat you will want something a little bigger than the Heinger Saphir Style Horse Clipper.  I'd look at the Heinger Xplorer - there's no lead to bother the horse and it is the quietest clipper of it's size.

Best All Rounder Horse Clipper 2020 - value, reliability, comfort:  This is hard...but I'm picking the Lister Liberty Mains horse clipper.  It's much tougher than the Lister Star of the Heiniger Progress, it's light and easy to use, it's quiet (although not the quietest) and it takes all the Lister blades, including the Covercote.  Plus, if you want to add a battery down the line, you can!  If anything goes wrong, Lister is based here in the UK and is very good at resolving any (rare) issues.  The price for the Mains clipper is excellent considering what you get for the money!

Best Horse Trimmer 2020:  Price really comes in to play here.  The top end sees the Heiniger Saphir (a favourite with vets).   It's an amazing trimmer, but you do need a healthy budget to get one!  Likewise the Lister Libretto is a good powerful trimmer 0 but at the top end of budgets.  If you have dogs who your trim (and even the odd child), then the Saphir or Libretto are the way to go.  If, however, you just want a trimmer for a few fiddly bits around your horse's face or legs then you can go for a smaller clipper.  The Wahl Adore is a great option in the mid price point range and has lots of lovely 'bits' with it so it looks like a lovely Christmas present!  And the Sierra Professional Trimmer is a real steal and does a brilliant job.

Heiniger Saphir Horse Trimmer (great for dogs too)  https://www.farmcareuk.com/heiniger-saphir.html  £279.99

Wahl Adore:  https://www.farmcareuk.com/new-wahl-adore-cordless-trimmer.html  £129.50 (the bundle makes for a lovely Christmas gift package)

Sierra Horse Trimmer:  https://www.farmcareuk.com/sierra-trimmer-kit.html  £44.99 (this really is a great trimmer at an incredible price.)

If you are looking for a Christmas gift for your horsey loved one, then please don't hesitate to email us for advice.  We're a family run business and we're happy to help.  Please order early as the industry is incredibly busy, with reduced staff, and struggling to keep up with demand.  We'd hate for you to lose out and not get the gift in time!
