Liveryman Harmony Plus or Heiniger Saphir? Which of these quiet clippers is best?

The Heiniger Saphir and the Liveryman Harmony Plus clippers are both very popular and on initial inspection seem very similar.

Both clippers offer:

  • 'all-in-one' solution that allows you to clip a whole horse and trim awkward to reach and sensitive places like ears (also allows you to groom dogs and other small animals)
  • Low vibration
  • Very quiet
  • Takes the popular and easy to find A5 snap on blades, from a range of difference brands
  • No need to tension blades
  • Options to run from mains or as a cordless clipper
  • Very light and comfortable to hold - great for small of weak hands.

So what is the difference and why do vets and professional groomers pay the extra for the more expensive Heiniger Saphir?  Is it worth the extra money?

Let's have a quick look at what you get first:

The Heiniger Saphir Horse: This option comes with a wide blade and 2 batteries.  It currently is on special offer and also includes the mains adapter, while supplies last.  It is on sale for £299.99 (inc tax)

The Liveryman Harmony Plus: This comes with a choice of blades and only 1 battery.  However, it includes the mains adapter as standard.  It is  cheaper at £175.99 (inc tax)

  • Up to 2 hours cordless clipping from a 3 hour charge.
  • Mains lead also included, so you can run it from the mains if preferred.
  • Blade speed of 2,600-2,700 stokes per minute
  • Ergonomic design for ease of use.
  • Ideal for horses, dogs, pets and veterinary use.
  • Comes complete with carrying case, oil and brush.
  • 1 year warranty
  • Choice of blades (select from Wide blade, narrow blade or vet blade)

Heiniger Saphir

  • 2 hours clipping from a 45 minute charge (and you get 2 batteries as well - so up to 4 hours clipping!)
  • 35W permanent magnet motor
  • Made in Switzerland
  • 2 year warranty
  • Ergonomic design for ease of use.
  • Ideal for horses, dogs, pets and veterinary use.
  • Comes complete with carrying case, oil and brush.
  • Choice of blades (select from Wide blade, narrow blade or vet blade)

Overall, the Heiniger Saphir is a more powerful and robust clipper, which is why it is the choice of the professionals.  If you are clipping a lot of animals, or if you have a yard or a horse with a very coarse coat, the Saphir is definitely worth the extra money.  It will last longer and work harder.  If, however, budget is a concern and you only have 1 or possibly 2 horses, the Harmony Plus is a real bargain.  The Liveryman Harmony Plus lets you easily clips a horse with an 'easy' coat, without having a separate trimmer and without worrying about tensioning blades.
